Like many professionals, lawyers are self-regulated. Most barristers in independent practice work from the Bar Library building at 91 Chichester Street, Belfast.
One of the most important tasks of the Bar Council is to act as the regulating body for barristers.
The Bar Council is responsible for the maintenance of the standards, honour and independence of the Bar. The Bar Council acts in the public interest to make sure that barristers practice ethically and competently. We set standards of conduct for barristers and discipline those who do not meet these standards.
All barristers regardless of their date of call to the Bar and whether or not they are practising are subject to the Bar's Code of Conduct. The Code sets out the standards of professional conduct and practice required of barristers and is available to download from the Code of Conduct section of the website
