About Us

The Bar Library, located at 91 Chichester Street, Belfast, is a private library servicing all Northern Ireland barristers.

The Library provides its members with state of the art legal information and information technology together with accommodation and office support services.

The Bar Council based in the New Bar Library building is the professional body representing barristers in Northern Ireland. Among other things it seeks to maintain the honour and independence of the Bar as part of the legal system. Through its Professional Conduct Committee, which includes people who are not barristers, it receives and investigates complaints against members of the Bar.

The Executive Council, comprised mainly of barristers but also including a number of judges, is now responsible for many of the functions which were formally vested in the Benchers of the Inn of Court. These include the financial and business administration of the Bar, determining qualifications for admission to the profession and appointing disciplinary committees to hear cases against barristers referred by the Professional Conduct Committee.

Information is also available on the Benchers, The Inn of Court, Committees & Membership and NI Lawyers Pro Bono Group.
